Sad news from the world of television: Andy Whitfield, the titular star of Spartacus: Blood & Sand, has to leave the show in order to receive aggressive treatment for a recurrence of cancer. He had been in remission after being treated for Stage 1 non-Hodgkins' lymphoma in March and was in training for season two. Whitfield received a clean bill of health in May and attended Comic-Con in support of the series in July. He also filmed a prequel to the series, which bridges season one and season two and will air on Starz in January.

Whitfield's departure leaves the series' future in question. The network, which already suspended production when Whitfield underwent his first round of treatment, has not made any decisions. --Ellen
