Amazon Blogs: Armchair Commentary Daily Digest

Check out these Updates from Armchair Commentary for July 16, 2009.

July 16, 2009

In case 5:30 a.m. PT was a touch early for you to stagger out of bed and watch live, you can still check out the announcement on YouTube:

(You might be saying to yourself, "why would I watch this?—I’m 99% sure I didn’t make the cut," but it is sweet to see Jim Parsons and Chandra Wilson learn about their own nominations live on TV. Hurrah for unexpected honors! The video also includes post-event comments from Entourage’s Kevin Connolly and Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello.)

30 Rock continues to be a favorite, garnering 22 nods--a record most ever noms for a comedy series in a single year. Mad Men dominated the drama category with 16 (and Jon Hamm also earned a nomination for his guest appearance on 30 Rock as Tina Fey’s too-handsome love interest, Dr. Drew. (Oh, Jon, is there anything you can’t do?)

As I was putting together this list of honored shows, I couldn’t help but notice how many of the nominated series and performers are quite similar to 2008… C’mon, Hollywood, would it have killed you to throw Battlestar a shout out in one of the top categories? I’ll pose these questions for discussion:

  1. What shows/performers keep getting unfairly passed over, and why don’t more people understand how awesome they are?
  2. What shows/performers seem, um… over-recognized?
  3. What shows/performers got exactly the accolades they deserve?

You can see a complete list of nominees on the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences site. And, if you perhaps feel the need to catch up on nominees you’ve missed, I will make the modest suggestion that you visit Amazon to find Emmy picks on DVD, Blu-ray, and Video On Demand. --Leah
