After months of publicity, Friday-Sunday was the premiere weekend of Disney Channel's Camp Rock 2. I missed Friday's broadcast and watched it on Saturday, which was the "Rock Along' version with sing-along subtitles. Sunday night was the dance version, and an extended edition comes out on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday.  A few random thoughts (warning: spoilers):

  • Demi Lovato might need to talk to her agent.  In the first movie she repeatedly lied because she was embarrased by her mom.  In this one, she was so pushy she annoyed all her friends.
  • Best song of the night: The Lovato-Joe Jonas duet, called "Wouldn't Change a Thing."  (The sing-along lyrics were actually useful when the two were singing in counterpoint.)
  • Are the campers' parents going to ask for a refund or a discount after their kids got fill-in counselors?
  • During the broadcast, a friend asked on Facebook whether Nick was going to have a bigger role since "Joe looks like a dork now." The answer is yes--Nick even got to play the second romantic lead.
  • The girl he romances is played by Chloe Bridges, a relative newcomer who reportedly auditioned for the lead role in the original Camp Rock movie that went to Lovato.
  • Nick also got to sing a solo song, "Introducing Me," which was charming but to my ear sounded like a copy of Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours."
  • Thanks in part to Nick's story line and other distractions, Alyson Stoner and Meaghan Martin had barely anything to do compared to their roles in the first movie.
  • When it comes to Disney Channel movies, I much prefer the High School Musical series.

--David

Seven-time Emmy Award winner Ed Asner reprises his Superman: The Animated Series/Justice League role as Granny Goodness in Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, the ninth entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies coming September 28, 2010.

Granny Goodness is the primary henchwoman for the evil lord Darkseid, ruler of the distant planet Apokolips and a cruel, ominous being even more powerful than Superman. Asner first voiced the role for four episodes of Superman: The Animated Series, and returned to those evil female roots for two episodes of Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.

Asner's storied career boasts seven Emmy Awards--three supporting actor honors for his role as Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, two more as the title character in Lou Grant, and a pair of awards recognizing individual supporting performances in the landmark miniseries Roots and Rich Man, Poor Man. He has won more acting Emmys than any other performer, and is the only actor to ever win Emmy Awards for playing the same character in both a comedy and a drama. In animation, Asner has run the gamut from guest spots on shows like Animaniacs, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Johnny Bravo, and King of the Hill, (to name but a few) to regular roles in Gargoyles, Freakazoid, Batman: The Animated Series, Spider-Man, and Captain Planet and the Planeteers. He also voiced the role of Santa Claus in the animated television special Olive the Other Reindeer (he's played Santa Claus for four different film/TV productions) and Carl Fredrickson in Disney/Pixar's Up.

Asner joins a Superman/Batman: Apocalypse cast led by fan favorites Tim Daly and Kevin Conroy reprising their seminal roles as Superman and Batman, respectively. Also featured among the celebrity-laden guest cast is Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age) as the daunting Darkseid, and sci-fi heroine Summer Glau (Serenity/Firefly, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles).

From Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation, and Warner Home Video, and based on the DC Comics series/graphic novel Superman/Batman: Supergirl by Jeph Loeb, Michael Turner & Peter Steigerwald, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse Apocalypse is produced by animation legend Bruce Timm and directed by Lauren Montgomery (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) from a script by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Tab Murphy (Gorillas in the Mist). It's available as a Two-Disc Special Edition DVD and on Blu-Ray (both with an Amazon-exclusive litho cel), as well as single-disc DVD and Video On Demand, all available in the DC Comics Store.

Asner, who turns 81 this November, had a few short minutes to answer questions following his latest recording session as Granny Goodness. Take note ... or Granny will know.

QUESTION: How does Granny Goodness compare to playing other female characters??

ED ASNER: I don't think I have played any other female characters before [laughs]. But if I did, she'd have more balls than any of them. It's become the fashion lately--there's Brian Bedford in Stratford doing Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde's play. What hasn't been done enough is women playing men in as butch a manner as possible. That's got to be even more fun. I'm talking somebody like Marjorie Main pulling it off.

QUESTION: What do you use as a focal point while voicing Granny?

ED ASNER: I'm thinking she's a lot of chest, a lot of high-pressure steam, and that she's probably got a constant focus on vengeance and wreaking havoc on whoever she can. And I want to get away with as much damage as I can in as high-flown an effeminate form as possible.

QUESTION: You've done it all and had long-lasting success in the entertainment industry. What's the enticement of voice acting for you?

ED ASNER: It's always a trip, a joyful trip to come into the studio, and especially working with this group. Andrea [Romano] is a delight to work with, and Bruce [Timm] knows this genre better than anybody. Plus, it's the ability to let your imagination take flight--to take chances, to plunge and to soar. That's something you don't get to do as an actor. You get to do it as a kid. So I grab the opportunity as often as I can.

QUESTION: With all the animation work you've done, and the huge success of Up, can we assume you see animated films and television as a viable source of entertainment?

ED ASNER: I've always loved cartoons--I watched them when I was young, I still watch them now. And it is interesting to see how much more adult they've gotten in terms of content, from these super hero pieces with their violence and more adult themes to the truly mature, fully-developed stories developed in films like Up and Wall-E. Today's animation goes places cartoons didn't used to go.

QUESTION: How do you feel about spunk?

ED ASNER: That all depends on who's got it.

The kids are headed back to school and whether they're nervous, excited, or downright petrified, there's a DVD out there that addresses exactly what they're going through.  For the little ones headed to school for the very first time, Nick Jr. just released The First Day of School, a compilation which features three shows about what kids can expect when starting school (Dora, Wonder Pets, and Blue's Clues) as well as three more toddler shows (Diego, Kai-lan, and another Wonder Pets episode).  Also, check out how Wubbzy gets over his nervousness about going to school in Wow Wow Wubbzy: Wubbzy Goes to Schoolor follow Curious George on his visit to kindergarten in Curious George: Back to School.

Tweens and Teens have a whole different set of concerns about going back to school and there are plenty of DVDs out there that offer some perspective on dealing with issues like peer pressure, fitting in, and bullying. Being the new kid in school is never easy and Alice Upside Down addresses just how difficult that can be in middle school while Private and The Cliqueoffer more extreme looks at the difficulty, and advisability, of trying to fit in with the "in" crowd. If bullying is a concern, check out An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strongfor some ideas about what to do when you're the victim of bullying. The Christian film To Save a Life explores teen suicide with a heavy emphasis on faith and the power of one to make a difference. For an exaggerated look at the dichotomy between the worlds of the high school jocks versus the nerds, check out High School Musicaland Glee: The Complete First Season--both will inspire lots of laughter and maybe even a sense of respect for those who might be different from oneself. For those looking to study up on some specific subjects, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Lightening Thief offers a good background in Greek mythology and the 30th Anniversary edition of Schoolhouse Rock features 46 musical shorts on everything from multiplication to grammar rules and American History.

What's on your list to watch before heading back to school? --Tami Horiuchi

It's the classic conundrum of every character actor: you know the face, but can't place the name. In the case of Danny Trejo, however, it's a face that's truly unforgettable, and a name that's top-billed in one of the most highly anticipated movies of the summer - Machete, Robert Rodriguez's high-octane tribute to action and exploitation movies of the 1970s. The film, which opens September 3, is Trejo's first leading role in a career that spans over two decades, and began in a place even rougher than Hollywood: San Quentin State Prison.

As detailed in the 2007 documentary Champion, Trejo had planned to become a boxer, but a spate of crimes and drug charges landed him in prison in the early 1980s. The experience helped him to turn his life around, becoming not only a California state prison boxing champ, but a 12-step program member that helped introduce him to the movie business. A friend in recovery hired him as an extra in the 1985 film Runaway Train; its screenwriter, fellow ex-con Edward Bunker (Reservoir Dogs), remembered Trejo and hired him to train Eric Roberts for his boxing scenes. Director Andrei Konchalevsky eventually cast him as Roberts' sparring partner.

Trejo's sinewy frame - highlighted by a tattoo of a woman in a sombrero that sprawls across his entire chest - and icy gaze made him a natural for bit and character parts that required unquestionable toughness and violence, and he essayed all manner of crooks, cons and gangsters in projects ranging from Mi Vida Loca (1993) and Marked for Death (1990) to episodes of "Baywatch." He became a staple of Robert Rodriguez's films after 1995's Desperado; Rodriguez was among the first directors to cast Trejo outside of his traditional roles by tapping him to play Isador "Machete" Cortez, the proud inventor uncle of Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara in Spy Kids(2001). He repeated the role, who eventually grew more comic, in the two sequels, and played an entirely different Machete in a faux trailer of the same name in Grindhouse (2007). It's this Machete that takes center stage in the new film, which features a genuinely eclectic cast that Robert De Niro, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba, Cheech Marin and Steven Seagal.

Like all character actors, Trejo worked in everything from low-budget, direct-to-video titles to major Hollywood features and everything in between, so a "best-of" list will be entirely dependent on one's tastes. Some viewers may only go for work with Rodriguez, which includes all three From Dusk Till Dawn movies and Once Upon a Time in Mexico, or want to see only his turns as a Stone Cold Baddie in pics like Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects (as bounty hunter Rondo) or the more recent Predators (as an ill-fated Mexican drug cartel gunman). However, some of Trejo's best work is in roles where he tempers his granite facade with a touch of humor, as in Once Upon a Time in Mexico - watch his stone-faced reaction to Johnny Depp's "Are you a Mexican or a Mexi-can't?" - or a degree of ruefulness, like in the little-seen prison drama Animal Factory (penned by Bunker) or even Rob Zombie's Halloween (as a mental hospital worker who takes pity on Michael Myers). And though it's not a good film by any means, the scene in Delta Farce in which his gang leader - named Carlos Santana - tears enthusiastically through a karoake version of "I Will Survive" shows a dedication to his craft that few other actors would have the stones to display on-screen. Viva Danny Trejo! -- Paul Gaita
