Sony announced today that newcomer Rooney Mara has been cast as hacker Lisbeth Salander in its big-screen adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and its two planned sequels, based on Stieg Larsson's blockbuster Millennium trilogy.

The juicy role of Lisbeth had everyone from Natalie Portman to Carey Mulligan to Ellen Page listed as a contender, but director David Fincher reportedly wanted to cast an unknown. Mara, 24, will appear in the director's upcoming film The Social Network. Her other credits include A Nightmare on Elm Street, Youth in Revolt, and scattered TV appearances on shows like ER. Her older sister, Kate Mara, is an actress best known for We Are Marshall and played Mark Wahlberg's girlfriend in Shooter.

Daniel Craig will play reporter Mikhael Blomvkist, Robin Wright his publishing partner/sometime lover Erika Berger, and Stellan Skarsgard as Martin Vanger, part of the Vanger family Mikhael investigates as he tries to solve a decades-long murder mystery. Sony will release the movie Dec. 21, 2011. Here's hoping Fincher's pitch-perfect casting thus far extends to the new Lisbeth.
